• This story took place in the 1960s. One night a group of boys had been to Rockwood Park near Bassett Forks and one of them had a bit too much to drink. He upchucked on his clothes but his friends were there to help him and they stopped in at the Fieldale Laundromat around midnight. The Laundromat stayed open all night and it had a restroom. They removed his clothes and put them in the washer. While they were waiting they began acting a little goofy and made a mess of the place. Well they had all been drinking. Finally the clothes were in the dryer and they were sitting in the doorway waiting. Along came Stegall making his rounds. He went in the Laundromat and when he came out he asked them if they knew who had made such a mess. The boys said they didn't know. And Stegall said "Well I've got to run up to Bassett now and I'll be back by here in about 30 minutes. And when I come back by we'll all sit down and see if we can't figure out who trashed the Laundromat." His car was barely out of sight when the boys jumped up and began to clean up their mess.

• Through the years Alfred Stegall had several deputies. One of the best Mayberry type stories involves his deputy and another deputy from a nearby town. We'll just call the Fieldale deputy X and the other deputy Y here. As the story goes they were chasing men that had just robbed a liquor store. They were headed north toward Roanoke, with deputy X driving right on the robber's bumper. Deputy Y told deputy X he was going to lean out and shoot that back tire. Deputy X yelled "Be careful!" About that time Deputy Y shot their own front fender and the bullet richocheted to blow out their headlight. Deputy Y then yelled "Watch out! They are they shooting back!" The next day Alfred met up with Deputy X at Garfield's and reprimanded him. ("Give me your bullet"). Deputy X did get mad.

• Carson Williams said he gave Alfred his nickname Sneaky Pete. Carson ran the Shell Service Station that R.B. Hundley restored in 2010. As it happened when they had the sock hops at the pool, Carson would clean out the back part of the station, because sometime it would be too cold to dance outside, so the kids would gather in the back of the station, Carson provided heat and music for them. He even put up curtains to make things look nice.
